![]() ![]() No bombings were carried out during 1941, and until the autumn of 1942. One final bombing (by three planes) was carried out on 18/19 December 1940, targeting the Pirelli plant but instead causing slight damage to a few houses and killing eight people, wounding 16. On the night of 26 August, eleven bombers bombed the Idroscalo. On the night of 18/19 August another bombing by four planes hit the Innocenti and Caproni plants and the Linate Airport. On the night of 15/16 August another raid ensued, but the reaction of the anti-aircraft batteries shot down one Vickers Wellington bomber, and induced the others to drop their load over the towns of Merate and Mariano Comense. On the night of 13/14 August, three bombers dropped bombs and propaganda leaflets the target was again the Caproni plant which however was not hit, while several buildings along a few streets were, with 15 killed and 44 wounded. Similar to Dostoevsky, the Underground Man criticises rational egoism and the totalitarian visions of the utopia. The Underground Man from "Notes from Underground" expresses Dostoevsky's ideas and an example of the type of problems that the modern society produced in Russia. Dostoevsky believed that in order to for the Russian people to live in harmony, they needed to go back to the traditional values of Russia, such as family, religion, personal responsibility and brotherly love. While in prison in Siberia, Dostoevsky learned that the Russian undereducated workers and the peasants would associate progressive thinkers and the upper class that used to oppress them and restrict their freedom. The second part of the novella is entitled "À propos of the Wet Snow", and describes some events that sometimes destroy or renew the underground man, who has the role of the first person, anti-hero, an indecisive victim of his society and untrustworthy narrator.ĭostoevsky analyses the effects that modern life has on the personality of this man at the margin of the society that Dostoevsky continued to explore in his subsequent works. ![]() ![]() The first part, "Underground", is a monologue, the diary of the underground man, an attack against the new Western philosophy, mainly the revolutionary novel What Is to Be Done? Quite an uncommon Ransome first edition in the dust jacket. The dust jacket is the original and not price clipped, it is substantially complete, but has a long closed tear to the rear panel, also other minor chips and short closed tears to the edges, and in 3 places unfortunately some well intentioned but mis-guided previous owner has repaired them with tape, the longer tear to the rear showing burns from a much older tape repair that presumably flaked away, otherwise it is rubbed at the folds, lightly marked and the spine is slightly age darkened. The text block is slightly toned and dusty, with some minor foxing and a neatly written gift inscription to the first blank page. ![]() The book is firmly bound in clean dark green cloth lettered in gilt, the extremities are lightly bumped and rubbed and there are small patches of fading corresponding with loss to the dust jacket. ![]() ![]() Envisaging the possibility of genuine renewal appears to be a deeply problematic undertaking. Tantalizing flashes of an alternative modus vivendi are offered through the rebellion of the protagonist’s daughter against the oppressive regime imposed by her parents, but the suggestion that there is no possibility of achieving real change is at least equally prominent in the text. The mechanisms of denial to which they take recourse prove inimical to life, and yet remain in place right until the end of the novel. In my reading, the impasse in the narrative present is accounted for by the characters’ failure seriously to engage with trauma. ![]() It diagnoses the demise of a way of life based on the principles of predictability, immobility and economic circularity. ![]() ![]() ![]() Graham Swift’s debut novel The Sweet Shop Owner recounts the final day in the life of an ageing shopkeeper whose wife has died and who is estranged from his daughter. ![]() ![]() So I don't know who the audience really is. It's also a bit odd because the character is so young, but I don't know how many middle school libraries could really carry it and I don't know if older teens would read about the addictions of a 7th grader.
